Things to do in Southampton in autumn, half term included

Wind off the water. Leaves stuck flat to the Old Town pavements. A sharp shower, then low sun on the Bargate. If you've brought the kids, the question lands before the kettle has boiled: what are we doing today? Southampton doesn't do a gentle autumn, and that's part of the appeal. Most things to do in Southampton in autumn reward a good coat and a loose plan.

Be ready for evenings that arrive around teatime. Coastal weather moves fast here, and a clear morning is no promise about the afternoon. The payoff is worth it. Medieval walls, Old Town history, half term workshops, a beer-marquee weekend in late October, ghost walks and fireworks by the water in early November.

Half term dates, because they catch people out

Southampton's October half term runs from Monday 26th to Friday 30th October 2026 for schools following the city council calendar. Academies can set their own dates, so check with your school. It's a busy week. Halloween falls on the Saturday straight after, and the popular sessions book up first.

Southampton Old Town & the medieval walls

On a clear day, walk the medieval walls of Southampton Old Town from the Bargate towards Town Quay and Mayflower Park. It's the city's history in the open air, and it costs nothing.

Go late morning and take it slowly. The walls aren't a route to rush. You'll pass gates and towers that have watched the water for centuries, and the walk ends where the city meets the sea. Finish at Town Quay and let lunch decide the next hour. Tudor House sits in the Old Town and pairs well with the walls. Check the museum pages for seasonal openings before you go.

SeaCity Museum on wetter days

When the weather turns, SeaCity Museum is the reliable indoor stop. From October 2026, hours run roughly Monday to Saturday 10am to 4.30pm, and Sunday 11am to 4pm. Titanic stories and city history fill a solid half-day without needing fine weather.

During half term, SeaCity Museum's Culture Club runs spooky autumn workshops from Monday 26th to Wednesday 28th October 2026, aimed at children aged roughly 6½ to 12. Book ahead and check the event page for session times. A workshop gives the day a shape - somewhere to be, something to make, and someone else leading for an hour. On a wet Monday at the start of half term, that's worth a lot.

Halloween at Tudor House

Tudor House Halloween falls on Friday 30th October 2026, from 10am to 4.30pm. The museum is free that day. There are family crafts, plus paid ghost-tour slots that are worth pre-booking. A Tudor building, a ghost tour and a craft table make a day that feels like an occasion without needing a late night. Go early, when younger children have the most patience for old rooms and spooky stories.

Southampton Common, free and muddy

Not every hour needs a ticket. Southampton Common is free, wide and muddy in the right way. Woodland, ponds and paths give children room to run, and the paths go on long enough to tire out legs that seemed unstoppable at breakfast.

The Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre has orienteering ideas if you want a route that keeps everyone moving. Wear boots, bring a ball and go in the morning while energy is high. On a clear day, it's the easy win among the things to do with kids in Southampton.

Oktoberfest Southampton at Guildhall Square (23rd & 24th October)

Oktoberfest Southampton returns on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th October 2026 at Guildhall Square. It's sessioned and over-18s only, with a Friday evening sitting plus Saturday daytime and evening sittings.

Book the session you want and leave a buffer for arrival. Eat properly before an evening ticket. Miss it, and you can still build a beer-led night in the centre. The marquee weekend is the dated highlight, not the only option.

Fireworks at Mayflower Park & ghost walks

Southampton Fireworks ("Pop Explosion") is on Saturday 7th November 2026 at Mayflower Park. Gates open from 4pm and fireworks start around 7pm. Tickets are advance only. Dress for standing outside after dark.

The same night, Tudor House hosts a 16+ ghost hunt running into midnight. Separately, a Southampton Ghost Walk leaves West Gate at 7.30pm on Thursday 5th November 2026. It runs in all weather, and the organiser page has the age guidance.

Where you go back to in between

A standard hotel room turns a trip into logistics. One room. Wet coats on every chair. A restaurant booking that falls apart when someone needs an early night, and a bill for every meal out.

Second Nature Southampton is a Hometel - the space of an apartment with the service of a hotel. You have a kitchen, so breakfast runs at your own pace and dinner can happen in. There's space to dry boots after a muddy morning on the Common. And after fireworks or a cold walk along the quay, a cocktail at the bar and somewhere to take your boots off beats chasing one more venue.

An autumn weekend in Southampton, planned simply

Most of this is walkable from the centre. One shape works for most days, with or without the kids:

  1. Morning: the Old Town walls from the Bargate, or Southampton Common while energy is high.
  2. Lunch: Town Quay, the centre, or back to your own kitchen.
  3. Afternoon: SeaCity Museum (with Culture Club from Monday 26th to Wednesday 28th October) or Tudor House.
  4. Evening: an Oktoberfest session in late October, a ghost walk in early November, or a quiet meal by the water.

On Friday 30th October, give the day to Tudor House Halloween.

Rain plans & getting around

Rain plans: SeaCity Museum and its Culture Club workshops, Tudor House, covered shopping in the centre and the Oktoberfest marquee (queues can still be outside).

Getting around: Southampton Central is a short walk from Guildhall Square and SeaCity Museum. The Old Town, Tudor House and Mayflower Park are walkable from the centre. Plan your route to the Common before you set off, and plan your fireworks entry from your ticket instructions.

Pick one ticketed evening. Keep the daytime simple - walls, quay, museum, a muddy morning on the Common. You don't need a full itinerary, just a rainy-day plan you trust and somewhere with room for everyone at the end of it. The weather will make some of your decisions for you. Let it.
